A variety of conditions involving the front surface of the eye result in distorted and blurred vision even with the use of glasses or general purpose contact lenses. Among these are keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, severe dry eye, some eye injuries, irregular astigmatism, and past corneal surgery. Scleral lenses vault over the clear covering (cornea) of the eye and a few millimeters onto the white area (sclera). They become, in effect, the front surface of the eye and correct for many kinds of irregularities. They provide excellent vision and despite their size, they are surprisingly comfortable.
